Belarusian shooter Sergei Martynov won the first gold medal for Belarus at the 2012 Olympic Games. It is the third medal in the 2012 Olympic Games medal collection of Belarus.
In Men's 50m Rifle Prone qualification a forty-four-year-old Belarusian scored 600 points, which equals the world record. In the final round Sergei Martynov advanced his results to score 705.5 points. Lionel Cox from Belgium took a silver medal (701.2 points). A bronze went to Rajmond Debevec (701.0 points).
Sergei Martynov is an experienced sportsman. He took bronze medals at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Sergei Martynov took part in six Olympic Games and entered the finals of 4 of them. Besides his Olympic medals Sergei has the titles of the Planet Champion (2006, 2010) and a gold medal at the Europe-1997 tournament.
